First Names As Signs Of Personal Identity: An Intercultural Comparison

We examined whether differences in the naming process followed by different families in different countries (South Korea, Brazil, Germany) influence the degree with which individuals identify with their first names. Results show that this is the case, and that also the nicknames serve different functions in the three countries examined.

Moral Concerns and the Attribution of Responsibility in Pre-Adolescent Girls’ Understanding of Obesity
ANNA KENDE

Focus-group research with pre-adolescent girls examined how an understanding of the social role of obesity is constructed in interactions. The results, based on qualitative discourse analysis, indicate that attribution of responsibility is used to maintain an equilibrium between a negative appraisal of obesity and the group’s positive moral self-image.

Banal Nostalgia: Shaping Collective Memories In Advertisements

This study focuses on the social side of everyday nostalgia. Through a close examination of one advertising campaign, better understanding is sought of how everyday nostalgia works and how group-based and individual nostalgia interlock in advertising. In other words, the study demonstrates how advertising can at the same time invoke shared conceptions of nostalgic past and appeal personal nostalgic memories.

The Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (ISPCC) is the oldest children’s charity organisation in Ireland, and currently provides 24 hour support and assistance for children. Due to the importance of external social supports and the limited research to date in Ireland, the aim of the present study was to explore the role of the ISPCC as a source of support for teenage children, with regard to stress, self-esteem and test anxiety.

Toward Globalization: Construct Validation of Global Identity Scale in a Nigerian Sample

Two studies examined the construct validity of the 10-item Global Identity Scale (GIS-10) developed by Türken & Rudmin (2013) in a Nigerian sample. Results provided evidence for concurrent, divergent, and predictive validity of the GIS-10 when correlated with openness to experience and pro-social personality. Discussion of the findings, includes their limitations, suggestions for further studies and implications.

Walking down Memory Lane: The Unfolding Experience of Nostalgia

An observational field study was carried out with the purpose of capturing and recording the unfolding experience of nostalgia, during a group of tour of the 1974-section of the museum Den Gamle By in Aarhus (The Old Town, Aarhus-Denmark). The study confirmed that the immediate experience of nostalgia is primarily positive, evoking warm feelings of joy, comfort, and security. However, these experiences may be followed by less joyful memories of the past, which has firstly been covered in the rosy light pictures of nostalgia.
